Why Your Business Isn't Showing Up in the Google Maps 3-Pack (and How to Fix It)
The map pack decides who gets the call. Here are the most common reasons local businesses miss out, and the fixes that move the needle first.

On this page
When someone searches "plumber near me" or "dentist in Leeds", Google shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. Most people call one of those three. If you are not in that shortlist, you are invisible to the customers who are ready to book today.
The good news: most businesses that miss the 3-pack are held back by a handful of fixable issues, not by a lack of budget.
How Google picks the 3-pack
Google ranks local results on three things: relevance (how well your business matches the search), distance (how close you are to the person searching) and prominence (how well known and trusted you are). You cannot move your office, but you can strengthen relevance and prominence.
1. Your primary category is wrong or too broad
Your primary Google Business Profile category carries more weight than almost anything else. "Contractor" is too vague if most of your work is roofing. Pick the most specific category that matches the service you want to rank for, then add secondary categories for the rest.
2. Your profile is incomplete
Fill in every section that applies: services, service areas, opening hours, attributes, products and a clear description. Complete profiles give Google more reasons to show you, and give customers more reasons to choose you.
3. Your reviews are thin or old
Review count, recency and your replies all matter. A steady flow of new reviews beats a burst of twenty reviews from two years ago.
- Ask every happy customer, ideally by text right after the job.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, within a few days.
- Never buy reviews or offer incentives. It breaks Google's rules and can get your profile suspended.
4. Your website doesn't back up your profile
Google cross-checks your profile against your website. Create a dedicated page for each core service and each main area you serve, with useful content, your name, address and phone number, and LocalBusiness schema.
5. Your business details don't match across the web
If directories list an old phone number or a different business name, Google becomes less confident about you. Clean up your main listings (Google, Apple Maps, Bing, Facebook and the directories that matter in your industry) so the details match exactly.
Where to start this week
- Check and fix your primary category.
- Complete every empty section of your profile.
